A Day at Wimbledon.

Jun 28th

Oh, the All England Club, how HUGE you are, and how annoying, and how amazing all at the same time.

So, I was at Wimbledon for a day this week, Wednesday. I wasn’t slumming it all day on the hill, but actually had Court One Tickets, thanks to a friend who decided to join the ballot, and got tickets, so therefore much more organised than myself!

Anyway, I had a wonderful day, of watching the tennis, Although I have to say that the first 2 matches that we actually sat and watched were rather, erm, Dull. It is week one of the championships, so maybe we’re not going to get all the nailbiting finishes that we really want, but both the first 2 games I saw, were straight sets.

Simon Greul GER        5 1 4
v
Novak Djokovic SRB (4) 7 6 6

So, that was the first game. Straight Sets!

Then, onto the womens game.

Jarmila Groth AUS       2 1

Serena Williams USA (2) 6 6

So, That was another game in straight sets, and I missed some of it, by nipping to the bar to grab a pint!

After those two, myself and my friend, decided to wander around aimlessly and just soak up the atmosphere, with the main aim to get around to the hill, and to slum it for a bit, while watching the remainder of the Federer match on Centre Court, via the HUUUUUGE screen that you can see.

So, we eventually got our way to the top of the hill, found somewhere to sit, and occasionally glanced at the screen, and saw some tennis.

Well, Federer won that game reasonably easily, and they flicked over to court one, to show some excitement that we’d missed, DAMMIT, we should have stayed on Court One.

Michael Llodra decided to go flying into the umpires chair and was injured, then Tommy Haas decided to play some tennis with the ball boys/girls for a few minutes.

I glanced at my programme, and realised that there were 2 Ladies Double matches that weren’t scheduled for any court. By my powers of deduction, I thought that one of these would be on Court One.

So, we wandered back around to our seats, to find that Jade Curtis & Anna Smith were playing Laura Robson & Georgie Stoop, so we decided to take our seats and watch this game.

It was worth it. First set went to Robson/Stoop, the second set went to Curtis/Smith. So, we’re now in the final set. And it’s very even. A break here, and then the other side break again. It gets to 6 games all.

Nailbiting commences, because as soon as one team gets 2 games ahead, it is all over. The same happens again, they keep their own serve, they break the serve, the others break the serve back. Wow. 10 games all.

It’s approaching the 3 hour mark for the game, and finally, finally, Robson/Stoop get a break of serve, and they keep their own serve! It finishes 13 games to 11 in the 3rd set, and Robson/Stoop go through to the next round.

Apart from the fact they get knocked out in Round 2, it was by far the best game I saw all day. It was full of excitement, and the crowd were the loudest they’d been all day in Court One, and considering it was the emptiest, that is some achievement.

So, there was no Federer or Murray on Court One that day, but I’m sure I saw one of the most exciting matches of the Championships so far, and maybe, just maybe, one of the most exciting I’ll actually see altogether this year.

Thank you weather for a wonderful day, Thank you Wimbledon for great tennis.

Here’s to next year!
